Julian Smith FRSA - Minister (Honorary)

Originally from the West Riding of Yorkshire, Julian read law at the LSE and theology at Oxford. He is a full-time Barrister of Lincoln's Inn and has been our part-time minister since 1992. He is a liberal Christian and social entrepreneur with a long-term interest in world religions, spirituality, pastoral and advisory work, and social justice. In addition to his duties as a lawyer and Minister, Julian is principal of the Brixton Legal Centre, Unity Child Contact Centre and Brixton Counselling, all based at the chapel. He enjoys reading, music, theatre, rambling, cycling, rowing, food and drink. He is a member of the National Liberal and London Rowing Clubs.

Gabriel Lee - Musical Director, Organist and Pianist

Gabriel has lived in London his whole life and is a Christian. He is currently studying in medical school and plays the piano, organ and violin. Before joining Effra Chapel as Musical Director, he depped as an organist in various churches and chapels throughout London.

In his free time, Gabriel also enjoys cross-country running, travelling and playing in a string quartet. If you would like to hear a particular piece of music played, feel free to let him know.

Andrew Leonard - Chairman of Trustees

Originally from rural Essex, Andrew read marketing and advertising at the London College of Printing, London Institute. He is the principal of Fitch & Ferrule, painters and decorators based in Clerkenwell. He is an accomplished trapeze artist and ariel acrobat who trained at the Circus Space, Hoxton and for several years toured with the Flying Elvises. Andrew joined Brixton in 1992, has been a trustee since 1996 and our chairman since 2008. He has an interest in mysticism and enjoys swimming, entertaining and friends.

Sue Young - Trustee and Administrator

In addition to her role as safeguarding officer, Sue is responsible for most of the day-to-day running of the chapel including all administration, accounts and generally making sure everything runs smoothly!

Sue is a committed Christian and has been coming to Effra Road Chapel for over 10 years. She has lived in London all her life, has 3 children and 7 grandchildren.

Stephen Cowley - Trustee and Warden

Originally from New Zealand, Stephen read international studies at Birkbeck College, University of London. He works in customer services for Trafalgar Travel. He collects coins and notes and enjoys theatre, travel, politics, current affairs and fine dining.

Victoria Hurst - Trustee

Originally from Sierra Leone, Victoria is an experienced administrator with Her Majesty's Court Service at the Royal Courts of Justice in The Strand. She is a wife, mother and grandmother and enjoys fashion, parties and cooking. Vicky has attended chapel since 1991.

Edwin Learner - Trustee

Originally from Sussex, Eddie read English at Oxford before becoming a qualified and accomplished tour guide and the author of Walk This Way. He has two grown-up children and has lived in Brixton for the last 30 years. He has been attending the chapel since the late 1990's. He and his long-term partner enjoy horse-riding and the Sussex countryside

Cynthia McPherson - Trustee

Originally from Jamaica, Cynthia is an experienced administrator who has lived and worked in Brixton for years. She is the mother of two grown-up daughters and enjoys cooking and a wide circle of friends. She has attended Brixton since the late 1990's and is a Christian.
